A centre of excellence for fundamental and innovation-driven research, the ESRF is an international facility funded by 21 partner countries. Each year, around 10 000 scientists from all over the world comes at the ESRF to unveil the secrets of matter thanks X-rays 10 trillion times brighter than medical X-rays. Five years ago, the ESRF opened its completely rebuilt x-ray source, ESRF-EBS (Extremely Brilliant Source), the first high-energy fourth-generation synchrotron and the world’s brightest X-ray source. ESRF-EBS opens new vistas for X-ray science, enabling scientists to address the global challenges facing our society such as health, climate changes and environment, but also energy and innovative industry.
